Description
Human lactation —breastfeeding— is an important and foundational public health issue under which the Affordable Care Act has mandated services be provided to all mothers by hospitals, health institutions and agencies in the community. Obtaining better breastfeeding outcomes for mothers has lead to recommendations that all maternal/child healthcare workers be educated in the skills necessary to support breastfeeding and the various levels of training required. There are several certificates offered at American River College which are designed to provide several levels of preparation for practice — hospital perinatal staff, educator/counselor, and consultant assistant.
