Description

A diagnostic medical sonographer is a highly-skilled professional who uses specialized ultrasound equipment and technology to create images of structures inside the human body that are used by physicians to make a medical diagnosis. Exams are normally performed in radiology departments in both hospitals and imaging clinics but differ from X-ray, CT scan, MRI, and nuclear medicine, since it uses sound waves to create the images. Sonographers are credentialed by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). As the profession has grown significantly over the past 20 years due to new technologies and the increase use of procedures, the growth for employment in this field is projected to increase in a variety of medical settings and in both urban and rural areas.
